It was Clarke's 54th attempt at winning a major title and among those he had to shake off was fellow TaylorMade staffer Dustin Johnson who finished tied second with Callaway's Phil Mickelson.

The Irishman's exceptional ball-striking in tough, windy and wet conditions during the last two days played a major part in his success and he was also grateful to the TaylorMade Penta TP ball, similar to that used by Martin Kaymer to win the US PGA at Whistling Straits last August.

But it was not just Clarke's stellar long driving and accurate iron-play that etched his name on golf’s oldest major trophy as he wielded his Scotty Cameron Red X to great effect with an average of 1.65 putts.

"It's been a dream since I've been a kid to win The Open, like any kid's dream is, and I'm able to do it, which just feels incredible right now," Clarke said.

With R11 3D Tuning, players can activate the three dimensions of distance with independent tune loft, face angle and flight path to maximise swing performance.

Clarke buried a clutch 20-foot eagle putt on the seventh and numerous par saves over the opening holes on Sunday to fend off the American challengers
His final-round playing partner Johnson might have been taking aerial shots of the Ulsterman’s ball during the final round, yet Clarke was still striking his drives well past the 310-yard mark.
